Sacramento Youth Band - The Sacramento Youth Band (SYB) is a non-profit organization that consists of a Concert Band, a Marching Band, a Jazz Band, and a Junior Band. The SYB has been educating young musicians in the Sacramento area since 1957, all the while providing them with a place to meet new friends, expand their musical abilities, and travel to exciting places like Disneyland, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Discovery Kingdom, and more! Sacramento Jazz Education Foundation Summer Youth Camp at Sly Park - The SacJEF Teagarden Jazz Camp is focused on improvisation, both individual and group, with an emphasis on taking theory into practice at all times. Students are assigned to bands with players of similar ability and experience, and perform in the final concert at the end of the week. There are nightly performances and jam sessions, with campers and faculty participating. Campers receive semi-private lessons, group instruction, and attend theory classes. There are also several recreation periods through out the day. Applications are available Jan 1 of each year. Camp this year is July 22-27 or July 29-August 3, 2024. https://sacjazzcamp.org/
Sacramento Youth Symphony and Academy of Music - Clink the link below to watch the symphony website for the audition schedule, posted in February of each year for the upcoming auditions in May. Applications need to be mailed by late April. www.sacys.org
Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps - The Mandarins practice heavily through the late spring and summer for a highly competitive performance season. Auditions are in December. Click on the link to reach the site. www.mandarins.org
University of the Pacific, Conservatory of Music - UOP (Stockton) has one of the top music schools in the country. To be admitted to the Conservatory of Music undergraduate programs, you must also be admitted to the University of the Pacific. Early action application priority filing date for Fall is in November the year prior. There's also a limited number of merit scholarships available. The audition dates are in January-February. For more information, go to UOP’s website http://www.pacific.edu/conservatory and click on Prospective Students or call the campus at (209) 946-2418. UOP also offers summer music camps for middle and high school students. Check out the "Music Camps" link from the menu of the home page or click on http://web.pacific.edu/x1283.xml. The Brubeck Institute Jazz Camp accepts applicants from grades 8-12. The Junior Band and Orchestra Camp is for students in grades 5-8; and the Senior Band, Orchestra, and Choir Camp accept students in grades 8-12. There is also a Senior Piano Camp for grades 9-12. Remember that honor band participants receive a $50 discount if they send in a copy of the program, showing their participation, with their registration. A limited number of partial scholarships are available for the Jazz, Senior, Piano and Music Theater Camps. The applications are due in May.
Berklee College of Music, Boston - Berklee College of Music has both summer and degree programs for musicians. Their early action application deadline is November 1 for the following fall semester. Auditions and interviews take place from August through December. For additional information about the programs, surf their comprehensive website at http://www.berklee.edu/.
